ROMANI COMMUNITY ARCHAEOLOGY
Romani Community Archaeology is a non-profit, established in 2022, formed to engage with the complex history and deep culture of Romani people in Britain by undertaking a series of archaeological projects, each one in close collaboration with modern Romani people.
Romani, or the British spelling Romany, is an ethnic group spread across the globe, with a unique culture, language and oral history. Traditionally nomadic, though now often settled, Romani people are thought to have left Northwestern India 1500 years ago, arriving in Europe around 900 years ago.
The first recorded Romani arrival in England was in 1512, and marked the beginning of the Romanichal; a distinct Roma sub-group that still thrives in the United Kingdom.
